The Postpartum Period:

Placenta Encapsulation & Placenta Services

After having a baby, postpartum mamas often forget to take care of themselves. We are very focused on greeting visitors, feeding our baby, taking pictures, and preparing for doctor's visits. Self-care during the fourth trimester (baby's first 3 months of life) is often overlooked. Research states 80% of moms experience the "Baby Blues", which is the emotional, hormonal shift that occurs after having a baby. Research also states that 20-30% of moms then go on to have a postpartum mood disorder (depression, anxiety, OCD, or psychosis). Caring for a newborn is rewarding, but it is also exhausting. During childbirth, moms lose lots of nutrients, and hormone levels are up and down. While this is normal, placenta preparation can help tremendously during the first 6 weeks postpartum, and beyond. Treat yourself to one of our placenta services!

Placenta services allow you to have replenished iron, heightened energy, decreased anxiety, lower risk of postpartum mood disorders, increased milk supply, decreased postpartum bleeding and pain, balanced hormones and more!

There are many of your own hormones in your placenta. Here are a few that we know exist in placenta even after delivery, and how they can help you during your postpartum period:

-Prolactin: promotes lactation

-Oxytocin: love hormone, promotes bonding, reduces pain, and facilitates breastfeeding

-Interferon: assists the immune system in protecting against infection

-Prostaglandins: carries helpful anti-inflammatory properties

-Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH): increases energy, and fights stress

-Cortisone: fights stress and unlocks energy stores

-Hemoglobin: replenishes iron, reduces the risk of anemia, facilitates iron production in the blood

-Gammaglobulin: immune system helper than protects against postpartum infections

-Urokinase Inhibiting Factor & Factor XIII: stops postpartum bleeding and facilitates wound healing

So, What Exactly Do You Do With My Placenta?

  • Placenta Capsules: At Birth and Beyond, we encapsulate placentas using the Traditional Chinese Medicine Inspired method. We prepare your placenta for encapsulation by removing the amniotic sac and umbilical cord, and washing, steaming, and dehydrating your placenta. After dehydration is complete, we grind the placenta up into very fine powder and encapsulate it in vegan capsules that are then ready for maternal consumption.

  • Placenta Tinctures: Prior to steaming and encapsulating, a piece of raw placenta is placed into 100 proof vodka and fermented in the sun. Placenta tinctures are excellent for use after placenta capsules run out. They can also be used during menopause for hormonal balancing as they have an indefinite shelf life when stored properly. Furthermore, placenta tinctures can be given to the daughter's of the placenta owner during her first menstrual cycle.

  • Placenta Prints & Umbilical Cord Keepsakes: These two placenta services are provided as a complimentary extra when tinctures or capsules are selected as the primary placenta service. Food grade dye is applied to the vein structures of the placenta, and watercolor paper is used to make a tree of life picture out of your placenta. Umbilical cord keepsakes are also made and are nice for framing with your placenta print. These two services can also be utilized to honor the placenta in the event that a placenta is unusable due to medical reasons.
